Sustainable absorbent pads for food packaging
Absorbent pads, for example for meat packaging, are special inserts that absorb excess liquid from the packaged food and thus improve the hygiene and shelf life of the products. For a sustainable solution, these absorbent pads can be made from our industrially compostable bioplastic M·VERA® B5037.
Why are our plastics more sustainable than fossil-based plastics or virgin plastics?
Biodegradable: Biodegradable plastics can be broken down by microorganisms into natural components such as water, CO₂ and biomass. They therefore leave no long-lasting plastic residues in the environment and reduce the impact of microplastics. To confirm this, our materials are certified by external institutes in accordance with official standards (e.g. OK compost INDUSTRIAL in accordance with EN 13432).
Biobased: Biobased plastics are made entirely or partially from renewable raw materials (e.g. maize, sugar cane, vegetable oils). As plants have absorbed CO₂ from the atmosphere as they grow, this plant carbon is converted into plastic and replaces fossil carbon from crude oil. As a result, the use of renewable raw materials can contribute to a lower carbon footprint of the end product. At the same time, finite fossil resources are conserved.
Biomass-balanced: In the biomass-balanced approach, fossil raw materials in the production process are replaced by a certain proportion of renewable biomass (e.g. also used vegetable oils, UCO used cooking oils). A mass balance system is used to ensure that the biobased proportion is correctly allocated. This results in a plastic with a lower carbon footprint compared to fossil-based plastics, but with the same properties.
Recycled plastics: Recycled plastics come from recycled plastic waste. By using recycled material, the amount of new plastic (virgin material) required is reduced. This reduces the need for fossil raw materials and the environmental impact of waste and CO₂ emissions can be reduced.
Conclusion: Compared to traditional, fossil-based plastics, the above-mentioned approaches help to conserve resources, avoid waste, reduce emissions and minimise the ecological footprint of plastics.
