M·BIOBASE® PP compounds

ISCC PLUS and REDcert² certified

Promotion of the bio- and circular economy

Sustainability Certifications ISCC PLUS and REDcert²

ISCC PLUS and REDcert² are leading sustainability certification systems for bio-based and recycled materials in the chemical industry (among others based on vegetable oil/fat waste or recyclate). By using sustainable material flows, BIO-FED contributes to the saving of fossil resources or to the promotion of the Bioeconomy and Circular Economy.

M·BIOBASE® PPH and M·BIOBASE® PPC

Biomass-balanced Polypropylen Compounds

BIO-FED has expanded its portfolio with ISCC PLUS and REDcert² sustainable certified M·BIOBASE® compounds made from biomass-balanced polypropylene (PP). The sources of raw materials for the PP are vegetable oil/fat waste, which is produced in various processes, e.g. in the food industry. Certification ensures traceability of the sustainable material flow along the entire value chain.

The products are marketed under the new brand name M·BIOBASE® PPH and M·BIOBASE® PPC. Changing from conventional polypropylene to the sustainable version is easy for processors, as the material can be used as a drop-in solution without adjusting the process parameters in production. The material alternative with reduced carbon footprint offers consistent properties and is suitable for a wide range of applications. They range from extrusion to injection-moulded thin-wall packaging and transparent containers.

We also add glass filled biomass-balanced polypropylene with ISCC PLUS certification for technical injection moulding applications to our portfolio.

For the M·BIOBASE® PPH and M·BIOBASE® PPC compounds, BIO-FED offers masterbatches in cooperation with its sister company AF-COLOR. Suitable for the field of application in the circular economy, these new color masterbatches are named AF-CirColor® and AF-CirCarbon®. The portfolio is supplemented by the matching AF-CirComplex® additive masterbatches.

Chain of Custody Certification

Traceability of Sustainable Feedstocks

ISCC PLUS and REDcert² certifications ensure the traceability of the sustainable material flow along the entire value chain. Every chain element up to the production of the final product is certified (chain-of-custody certification), allowing the product to be labelled as sustainably certified to the end consumer. The following is an example of a ISCC PLUS supply chain.

*In addition, there is the possibility for brand owners to buy a license from ISCC PLUS in order to be able to promote final ISCC PLUS products even without certification.

Products Without Rainforest Deforestation

Ecologically and Socially Responsible Raw Materials

Chain-of-custody certification guarantees that the raw material sources are certified sustainable. Certified waste streams are audited to ensure that they are not intentionally produced or contaminated to be considered waste.

Certain sustainability requirements apply to the agriculture of arable crops, including:

  • Protection of areas with high carbon stocks (e.g. rainforests, peat bogs) and with high biodiversity
  • Sustainable management to protect soils and waters
  • Respect for human rights

Mass Balance Approach

Allocation Factor

The value chain of products in the chemical industry is often very complex. In order to be able to track the sustainable material flow in a simple way, the mass balance approach is used.

We use the allocation factor to show how much biomass and/or recycled material is allocated to the certified product. The allocation factor indicates the proportion of fossil resources that have been replaced by biomass and/or recyclate in the value chain of the material. It is given as a percentage (max. 100%) and refers to the organic share of the product. The correctness of the allocation is confirmed by ISCC PLUS or REDcert² certification.

The principle behind this is similar to that of green electricity:

The consumer does not know whether the electricity from his socket is generated directly from renewable energies. However, the electricity provider is obliged to feed the corresponding amount into the power grid. Overall, this increases the amount of green electricity. Similarly, the use of sustainable materials is increasing in the chemical industry. The following graphic illustrates the mass balance approach.
