PCR recyclate – PE from recycled beverage cartons

What happens to empty beverage cartons after they have been thrown away? Instead of being disposed of as waste incineration they can start a second life as recycled plastic.

From waste to material

Plastic based on post-consumer recyclate

Beverage cartons consist of complex composite materials containing paper fibres, plastics and aluminium. Recycling these materials efficiently has long been a challenge. Thanks to the innovative and patented technologies from our partner company Saperatec GmbH, the various components can now be successfully separated and recycled. Saperatec uses a unique water-based separating liquid that enables the layers of these composite materials to be separated efficiently. This allows high-quality raw materials such as polyethylene (PE) to be recovered, which is then used for new products. The polyethylene (PE) recycled from the beverage cartons is accordingly based on on post-consumer recyclate (PCR).

Recycled PE from beverage cartons

How are old beverage cartons turned back into PE?

  • Used beverage cartons: Used beverage cartons from municipal waste collection and sorting are shredded.

  • Recovered material: Separation of the composite materials of the beverage cartons using a water-based separating liquid. From this, post-consumer PE (LD and HD) is recovered.

  • New products: The recycled PCR-PE can be used to produce a wide range of applications.
